Abstract
This article aims to introduce media education as a central basic concept of a theory of media education, because it is better suited than the term media competence to grasp the subject area and the tasks of media education in their complexity. For this purpose, the term media education is placed in an anthropological, a system-theoretical and an educational-theoretical frame of reference. On this basis, media education can then be described as a self-directed process and the consequences for media education practice can be derived from this.
