Abstract

The following text deals with the use of supervised monitoring as an empirical, media pedagogical method in the context of online teaching and blended learning. Supervised monitoring consists of computer- and internet-supported data collection that is cross-checked against real processes and contexts on site, e.g. at the university, and reported back to the participants. The method is exemplified in the text using the interdisciplinary, university-based blended learning BMBF project WiBA-Net. WiBA-Net involves the multimedia preparation of teaching material for the subjects of building materials science and materials mechanics in the training and further education of civil engineers and architects. The teaching and learning network was developed by civil engineers, architects, computer scientists, pedagogues and web designers from six universities. Pedagogy held one of 16 positions. Supervised monitoring was used as a method within the framework of a method mix (triangulation) of process-accompanying evaluation, which will be briefly outlined first. The text then describes the method of supervised monitoring on the basis of a field report. The field report covers the conception, implementation and practical work with monitoring in one semester in the interdisciplinary project WiBA-Net. The text concludes with a research question on the appropriate number of pages in online courses, which supervised monitoring can help answer.
