Abstract
Die Grounded Theory (GT), entwickelt von Anselm Strauss und Barney Glaser in den 1960er-Jahren, entstand in einem methodologisch pluralistischen Umfeld, das keine strikte Trennung zwischen qualitativen und quantitativen Methoden kannte. Dieser Beitrag argumentiert, dass GT nicht nur mit Mixed Methods vereinbar ist, sondern ursprünglich als solcher konzipiert wurde. Basierend auf ihrer Ausbildung an der University of Chicago integrierten Strauss und Glaser narrative, beobachtende und statistische Daten in einem rekursiven methodischen Zyklus. Im Zentrum dieser Methodik steht Strauss’ innovative Auffassung von Zahlen – nicht als neutrale Fakten, sondern als Repräsentationen sozialer Bedeutungen. Anhand von frühen Studien (1950 – 1965) wird gezeigt, wie narrative Daten in skalierte Muster überführt und anschliessend im Rückgriff auf Kontexte und individuelle Aussagen interpretiert wurden. Dieser methodische Loop ermöglicht eine simultane Auseinandersetzung mit deskriptiven, kausalen und prozesshaften Fragestellungen. Abschliessend wird diskutiert, wie klassische GT-Praktiken im digitalen Zeitalter – etwa im Kontext von NLP, KI-gestützter Analyse und transdisziplinärer Forschung – neue Relevanz erlangen. GT bietet eine bedeutungszentrierte Methodologie, die klassische empirische Forschung mit neuen digitalen Verfahren verbindet.
