Abstract
Large Language Models (LLMs) open up new possibilities for qualitative data collection, particularly by enabling the collection of qualitative data at greater scale. At the same time, it is necessary to critically examine whether LLM-based interviews can establish trust-based interactional situations and whether they are suitable for context-sensitive, case-oriented understanding. This paper comparatively investigates an LLM-based social network interview and peer conversations between students about personal network maps. The study follows a conversion mixed-methods design: interview and conversation data are coded, quantified, and analysed statistically. The analysis focuses on (1) follow-up questioning behaviour, (2) response length, (3) congruence between network maps and interviews/conversations, and (4) participants’ subjective experiences of the data collection formats. The results show that the LLM-based interview generates significantly more follow-up questions than peer conversations, without an increase in response length. In both formats, some actors depicted in the network maps remain unaddressed; however, peer conversations more frequently elicit additional actors who are not included in the network maps. Student teachers perceive the questioning behaviour in the LLM-based interview as structured and conducive to reflection, but also as repetitive and, at times, cognitively demanding. The paper discusses implications for the use of LLM-based semi-structured interviews and outlines potentials for conversion mixed-methods analyses.
