Abstract
In a participatory research process involving young people as experts in their own field, interaction processes in (mediated) spaces of action are examined in order to draw conclusions about the influence of the interplay between media and non-media forms of communication on young people’s opportunities for participation.
Based on focus group interviews with full-time and volunteer experts, as well as young people, collaborative interpretive work with co-researchers is conducted to first identify the prerequisites for successful participation. Theses regarding analog and digital youth participation are discussed, and media-supported ideal models of participation formats are developed and implemented.
The process description presents the development, testing, and evaluation of three examples of ideal participation formats: a youth policy bar camp, a talk series on diversity topics designed to bring young people and experts into an interactive exchange, and a gaming stream for the playful further development of the model region.
All three formats were supported through the social media platform Instagram and the live streaming platform Twitch. Data on follower behavior from these platforms was included into the analysis of interaction and participation behaviors, as were the transcripts of the recorded series of talks.
Differentiated according to objective and survey method, the types of materials generated during the process are discussed in terms of its limits and potential, and opportunities and limitations of participatory youth media research are derived from the results.
