Abstract
Children are often the focus of media research in order to gain insights into their experiences of media use. In terms of research ethics, various goals, values and methods stay in tension with each other: For example, participation rights can conflict with protection rights of children (such as protection against re-traumatization in research on stressful online experiences). Media research can serve children as a social group, but at the same time can place stress and strain on individual participating children (research objectives vs. child welfare). Children are included as informants in media research, but rarely do they have an influence on different aspects of the research process (objects vs. subjects of research).
This article uses the process of informed consent as an example to examine such tensions, as the requirements of research ethics go well beyond minimum legal demands: In many countries, children under the age of 14 are not allowed to give legally binding informed consent, although childrenʼs rights speak in favor of greater participation. Against this background, five challenges and areas of tension are discussed: (1) conflicting attitudes of children and legal guardians regarding participation in empirical studies, (2) withdrawal of consent to participate after the study has been completed, (3) low trust in science, (4) contradiction between legal requirements for minorsʼ capacity to consent and childrenʼs rights for participation, (5) conflicting objectives between research funding and participatory research. Arguing from a child rights perspective, the outlined areas of tension illustrate possible points of friction between research ethics, research methodology, research economics and childʼs rights, referring to informed consent in empirical research as an example.
