Abstract
This article aims to develop a propaganda-sensitive, structure-based analytical model for the systematic reconstruction of propagandistic functional logics in digital games. It addresses a central shortcoming of existing research: while digital propaganda games are increasingly identified, propaganda is often assumed implicitly or inferred from isolated features rather than reconstructed as a media-immanent structural performance. In response, the article introduces the Model for the Analysis of Digital Propaganda Games (MAPs), which conceptualizes propaganda using the criteria-guided coupling of intraludic structural coherence with extraludic reference and framing logics. The model development proceeds stepwise. First, the strategic rationales of extremist game production and prototypical structural features are reconstructed using «Heimat Defender: Rebellion» as a paradigmatic case. Building on this, established analytical models from Game Studies are examined with regard to their propaganda-theoretical applicability. In a subsequent step, MAPs is elaborated with a focus on narration, aesthetics, and rule systems, while systematically integrating extraludic references as constitutive elements of the game’s meaning architecture. MAPs operationalizes propaganda through a cross-structural coherence check, three heuristic guiding questions addressing propagandistic structural offerings (heroization, enemy construction, and legitimation of violence), and three guiding questions targeting the coupling of intraludic meaning-making with extraludic references and forms of extradiegetic player address. A low-inference codebook makes the underlying indicators and coding logics transparent and is designed to ensure the intersubjective traceability and analytical comparability of the model’s application. The article concludes by outlining the scope, limitations, and perspectives for the validation and further development of the analytical model.
