Abstract

This article discusses the potentials and challenges of using virtual reality (VR) for simulation gaming in the context of university teaching. In the scenario examined, a simulated school conference has to decide whether and how a student with a lower leg prosthesis can participate in an advanced sports course. The students take on roles such as student representative, school management or the advising sports teacher and develop argument-based strategies to work out a formal decision within the school conference.
The mixed-methods study focuses on the question of whether immersive VR technology promotes studentsʼ motivation and interest in the simulation game and supports the social learning processes of the participants by creating a higher degree of game immersion, i. e. mental immersion in the simulation game scenario. It becomes evident that VR-supported simulation games currently still pose specific challenges (including technical reliability, visual representation, and wearing comfort), but at the same time offer new potential for the simulation gaming method, primarily through increased role-playing, opportunities for location-independent use, and the reduction of inhibitions. In addition, the study shows that the possibilities offered by VR-supported simulation gaming lead to greater immersion in the game, i.e. the students in the VR group immersed themselves more deeply in the game world, felt more emotionally and cognitively connected to the game, and experienced themselves more strongly to be part of the game world. The article thus provides initial empirical evidence for the further development of VR-supported simulation games and their role in university teaching.
