Abstract

From its origins, media research is closely linked to concepts of impact research and media use. This is because the large media corporations and television and radio stations were strongly interested in knowing more about how their programmes were received by the audience. Since the emergence of private media companies in the 1980s, this need has become even stronger - not least for commercial reasons. After all, the reach that a broadcaster can count on for its offerings helps determine advertising revenues.
