Abstract

This chapter presents the empirical analysis of the transmedial storyworld of the Tomb Raider franchise, focusing on the media formats of video game and comic. In a first step, the three video games of the reboot trilogy (Tomb Raider 2013, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Shadow of the Tomb Raider) and their corresponding comics are examined using a neo-formalist analytical framework. Characters, objects, mise-en-scène, narrative structures, and the specific medial realization of both formats are systematically described and compared. In a second step, a category system valid across media is developed using Grounded Theory methodology. Four categories are identified — security and control, reflection on one's own actions, time, and memories — alongside the overarching key category of boundary transgression. In addition, cross-media dominants and boundary patterns are identified at the physical, psychological, metaphysical, cultural, spatial, and biographical levels. Finally, the key category is contextualized within educational theory through an exemplary scene analysis: using the protagonist Lara Croft's process of memory work and mourning as a case study, the analysis demonstrates how transmedial narration mediates and renders experienceable processes of biographization and the transformation of self-world relations in the sense of Structural Media Education (Jörissen and Marotzki 2009).
