Abstract

Stronger collaboration between educational research and practice is consistently called for, but different system logics hinder such collaboration. Moreover, it remains unclear what such collaboration could look like. This study examines knowledge transfer practices in research projects on education and digitalisation. It distinguishes between unidirectional and bidirectional communication formats of knowledge transfer. As a part of the BMBF-funded «Metavorhaben Digitalisierung im Bildungsbereich» (Digi-EBF), researchers were surveyed at mid-term and at the end of the project on their use of different communication formats with practitioners. The data were aggregated at sub-project level (N = 89–98) and analysed using correlations. The results suggest that towards the end of a project, there is an increase in communication between projects and practitioners. Unidirectional formats are more common than bidirectional formats. However, the exchange was perceived to be more beneficial when bidirectional formats were used. We discuss the use of uni- and bidirectional knowledge transfer formats as an opportunity to shape the interaction between educational practice and research. Uni- and bidirectional formats serve different purposes and should therefore be aligned with the design of a research project.
