Abstract

Due to the introduction and updating of the educational plans, day-care centres have been increasingly called upon to become active in media education for some years now. Even though there are now various further training initiatives, current studies cannot prove any fundamental progress in media education practised across the board. In this article, the current situation of media education in Germany and specifically in North Rhine-Westphalia is presented with reference to empirical studies and structural framework conditions. Following on from this, the authors present a training concept of the media education initiative Medienkompetenz-Kitas NRW (Media Competence Day Care Centres NRW), which was carried out using an in-house training approach in twelve day care centres in NRW. The focus of the training was on imparting basic technical knowledge and action-oriented methods for active practical media work as well as promoting media pedagogical reflection knowledge. Based on the evaluation of the project and the current situation of media education, implications for the further education and training of educators are named in the course of an intended sustainable anchoring of media education in day care centres.
